Fourth Annual Skinny Salmon

July 16, 2022 — Manzanita (Dock St.)

Start time 10:00 am (meet earlier depending on how long it takes you to get ready)

 The Route

We’ve got different options for whatever your heart desires and easy logistics! There are three courses of approximately 1, 2, and 3 miles. As you’ll see from the map below, everyone starts and finishes at Dock Street.

The 1-mile course is The Triangle, shown in red.  2-mile course is shown in yellow, 3-mile in green.

The 2- and 3-mile courses also start with the first leg of The Triangle, then continue along the east shore of Manzanita to its southern tip and up the west shore to the large pier across from Dock Street (the end of The Triangle’s second leg).

At the pier, 2-milers will head across Manzanita back to Dock Street and 3-milers will head NNE to a pier (first one after our usual turn-around pier when we swim north) and then return to Dock Street along the shore.

It’s easy for anyone to change the distance they want to swim in the middle of the event: you can decide to go further — or to bail — at the end of 1 or 2 miles.

The Conditions

It looks like it's going to be good weather, sunny and warm. Water temps in the bay are in the low 60s these days which is very comfortable if you have been swimming over the winter. Wetsuits are recommended unless you have been training regularly without.

High tide is 10.5 feet at 6:44 am; low tide is -2.7 feet at 1:29 pm, so, a pretty big range which means we'll have some fairly strong currents running south to north. That will be a bit of a challenge for the last 1/2 mile or so of the 3-mile trip, but that just means the snacks waiting for you post-swim will be that much tastier.

Parking at Dock Street

Carpool if you can! Parking is tight, please angle park if possible (there may be other people there as well on a nice day) to pack in more cars. Please be respectful of the neighbors.

DISCLAIMER:  We swim in the open water without a coach, without life guards, and often without any escorts.  I serve as a coordinator and keeper of the e-mail list, but this is not "my" group and I assume no responsibility for the safety of any participants.  If you come out with us, you are assuming all the risks of swimming in Puget Sound (or whatever body of water we may swim in), including but not limited to hypothermia; cramps; heart attack; getting hit by a boat, water skier, or a bunch of daft teen-agers on tubes; drowning; injuries from wildlife such as jellyfish, seals, orcas, and otters; swallowing disgusting water; e coli, giardia, leaking septic systems, and toxic spills; exposure to coronavirus; running into a buoy, log, dog, or dead object; nuclear submarines; and everything and anything else that can happen out there; and DUI on the way home.  Any escorts are accompanying us as a courtesy and are not responsible for your safety; they are not trained in open-water rescue and have not assumed a duty to act as coach or life guard.  We try to keep an eye out for each other while we're swimming, but it's unlikely anyone will notice right away if you get into trouble. And, all of this also includes the possibility of death as well as injury.
